Barbell Standing Calf Raise
- Category
- Lower Legs
- Equipment
- Barbell
- Target
- Calves
The barbell standing calf raise loads the gastrocnemius and soleus together with a straight knee, unlike the seated version which isolates the soleus alone. It's one of the more direct ways to build calf size and strength since the load sits right on the shoulders at the top of a compound-feeling movement. Get a full stretch at the bottom and a real pause at the top rather than bouncing through short reps.
How to Do the Barbell Standing Calf Raise
- Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and place a barbell across your upper back.
- Raise your heels off the ground as high as possible, using only your toes.
- Pause for a moment at the top, then slowly lower your heels back down to the starting position.
- Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.
Muscles Worked
The Barbell Standing Calf Raise primarily targets the Calves, with Hamstrings as the primary synergist muscle group, along with the Glutes.
