Waist Exercise · Cable
A standing cable crunch trains the abs against resistance while upright, using a hip hinge and spinal flexion combination rather than the floor-based curl of a traditional crunch. It's a less common ab exercise, useful for anyone who prefers standing work or wants a change from floor-based crunches. Bending from the waist and rounding the spine, not just leaning forward stiffly, is what actually loads the abs.
How to Do the Cable Standing Crunch
- Attach a cable handle to a high pulley and stand facing away from the machine.
- Hold the handle with both hands and position it behind your head, keeping your elbows bent.
- Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and your knees slightly bent.
- Keeping your abs braced, exhale and crunch your torso down toward your knees, bringing your elbows toward your thighs.
- Pause briefly at the bottom of the movement, then slowly return to the starting position.
- Continue for the set reps, taking care to lower with control and reset your posture between each rep.
