Cable Seated Twist form demonstration - targeted for Abs Waist workouts

Cable Seated Twist

The seated cable twist trains rotational core strength in a stable, seated position, which removes the hip and leg involvement that a standing twist naturally includes. That isolation makes it easier to feel the obliques working specifically rather than the whole core moving together. Rotating from the torso, not just swinging the arms across the body, is what actually loads the obliques.

How to Do the Cable Seated Twist

  1. Sit at a cable machine with your feet flat on the floor and your knees slightly bent.
  2. Hold the cable handle with both hands and extend your arms straight in front of you.
  3. Keeping your core braced, slowly rotate your torso to one side, pulling the cable across your body.
  4. Pause briefly at the end of the range of motion, then slowly rotate back to the starting position.
  5. Repeat on the other side.
  6. Continue alternating sides for the desired number of repetitions.

Practice and progression

Choose a short set of controlled repetitions or a manageable hold, following this movement's setup. End the set when you lose the demonstrated position. Build control before increasing repetitions, duration or resistance; holds, carries and moving drills need different prescriptions.

Technique & Form Tips

Focus on trunk flexion, rotation, or anti-movement stability as required by your specific variation. Maintain the suggested pelvic and spinal orientation to keep tension focused on the abdominal area throughout each repetition or hold.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Copying the wrong trunk action: Follow the demonstrated movement. A held plank, rotation and crunch require different actions rather than the same repeated trunk curl.
  • Lower back arching: Keep the spine controlled to prevent the lower back from hyperextending under the load.
  • Excessive speed: Perform movements with deliberate control rather than relying on rapid, bouncing motions.

How to Breathe During This Exercise

Maintain a steady breathing rhythm during the effort.
