Band Horizontal Pallof Press form demonstration - targeted for Abs Waist workouts

Band Horizontal Pallof Press

The horizontal pallof press trains the core to resist rotation rather than create it, which is a different and often neglected demand compared to crunches or twists that move through rotation. Pressing the band straight out from the chest while it pulls you sideways forces the obliques and deep core to fight that pull isometrically. It's one of the better anti-rotation exercises for lifters dealing with a core that feels strong in the mirror but weak under a loaded carry.

How to Do the Band Horizontal Pallof Press

  1. Secure the band to a sturdy anchor point at waist height.
  2. Stand sideways to the anchor point, feet shoulder-width apart.
  3. Hold the band handle with both hands and step away from the anchor to build tension in the band.
  4. Draw your hands to your chest, keeping your elbows bent and tucked in close.
  5. Brace your core and hold a stable stance.
  6. Press your arms straight out in front of you, pushing the band away from your torso.
  7. Hold the extended position for a few seconds, focusing on keeping your core tight.
  8. Slowly draw your hands back to your chest, resisting the band's pull the whole way.
  9. Repeat for your target rep goal, keeping your core engaged and avoiding any reliance on momentum.

Practice and progression

Choose a short set of controlled repetitions or a manageable hold, following this movement's setup. End the set when you lose the demonstrated position. Build control before increasing repetitions, duration or resistance; holds, carries and moving drills need different prescriptions.

Technique & Form Tips

Focus on trunk flexion, rotation, or anti-movement stability as required by your specific variation. Maintain the suggested pelvic and spinal orientation to keep tension focused on the abdominal area throughout each repetition or hold.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Copying the wrong trunk action: Follow the demonstrated movement. A held plank, rotation and crunch require different actions rather than the same repeated trunk curl.
  • Lower back arching: Keep the spine controlled to prevent the lower back from hyperextending under the load.
  • Excessive speed: Perform movements with deliberate control rather than relying on rapid, bouncing motions.

How to Breathe During This Exercise

Maintain a steady breathing rhythm during the effort.
