Exercise 3286 · REF JsOV1SU
The muscle up is already one of the harder bodyweight skills to build — pulling high enough to transition over the bar and press out on top — so adding external weight is reserved for lifters who've already got strict muscle ups locked in. It combines a pull-up's back and bicep demand with a dip's triceps and chest demand in one continuous movement. Weight should be added in small increments once the transition itself is no longer the limiting factor.
How to Do the Weighted Muscle Up
- Start by hanging from a pull-up bar with your palms facing away from you and your hands slightly wider than shoulder-width apart.
- Engage your core and pull your body up towards the bar, leading with your chest.
- As you reach the top of the movement, transition your grip so that your palms are facing towards you.
- Continue pulling yourself up until your chest reaches the bar, then pause for a moment.
- Slowly lower yourself back down to the starting position, maintaining control throughout the movement.
- Repeat for the desired number of repetitions.
