Back Exercise · Dumbbell
Shrugging from an incline bench changes the angle of pull on the traps compared to standing upright, and removes the ability to use the hips or knees to help start the weight moving. That strict, supported position isolates the traps more directly than a standing shrug does. It's a good accessory for building upper trap thickness without adding to lower-back fatigue.
How to Do the Dumbbell Incline Shrug
- Set an incline bench to a 45-degree angle and sit on it holding a dumbbell in each hand.
- Plant your feet flat on the floor and let your arms hang straight down with palms facing your body.
- With your arms kept straight, shrug your shoulders up toward your ears as high as you can.
- Hold that contraction briefly, then slowly lower your shoulders back to the starting position.
- Repeat for your desired repetitions, keeping constant tension on the working muscle throughout.
