Barbell Wide Bench Press form demonstration - targeted for Pectorals Chest workouts

Barbell Wide Bench Press

Widening the grip on a bench press shortens the range of motion and shifts more of the load onto the chest, at the cost of pushing the shoulders into a riskier position at the bottom. It's a lift bodybuilders use to bias pec width over tricep involvement, not one most powerlifters touch given the joint stress. Keep the descent controlled — the wider the grip, the less room there is for a sloppy bar path to go unnoticed.

How to Do the Barbell Wide Bench Press

  1. Lie flat on a bench with your feet flat on the floor and your back pressed against the bench.
  2. Take a wide grip on the barbell, slightly wider than shoulder-width apart.
  3. Unrack the barbell and hold it directly above your chest with your arms fully extended.
  4. Slowly lower the barbell toward your chest, allowing your elbows to flare out slightly.
  5. Pause briefly once the barbell touches your chest, then press it back up to the starting position.
  6. Continue for the set reps, taking care to lower with control and reset your posture between each rep.

Technique & Form Tips

Press by straightening the elbows while controlling the movement of the upper arms. Bench presses, push-ups and dips use different support points and shoulder positions; match the setup and range to the demonstrated variation.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Extreme elbow flare: Adjust the angle of your upper arms to find a comfortable position for your shoulders.
  • Using the wrong shoulder setup: Follow the specific support and shoulder movement shown. A bench-press setup does not apply unchanged to a push-up or dip.
  • Using momentum: Control the descent and ascent to focus on steady movement.
