Barbell Plate Calculator: Load Each Side

Choose your target, actual bar weight and plate sizes. See what to load on each side in pounds or kilograms, including the closest achievable total when your plates cannot match the target.

Enter the measured bar weight. Unit changes convert this value; they do not select a different bar.

Available plate pairs

One pair means one plate for each side. Enter 0 for unavailable sizes. Inventories are separate for lb and kg plates.

How the plate calculator works

Subtract the bar and collar pair from the total, then divide by two. A 225 lb target with a 45 lb bar and no collars needs 90 lb on each side: two 45 lb plates. A 100 kg target with a 20 kg bar needs 40 kg per side: a 25 kg and a 15 kg plate when both are available.

If you limit the inventory, the calculator checks combinations rather than always choosing the largest plate first. It selects the heaviest achievable total at or below your target, then prefers fewer plates. It never silently treats an unavailable plate as available.

Bar weights, collars and units

Enter your actual bar and collar pair weights, especially for EZ, technique and trap bars. A 45 lb bar is about 20.41 kg; changing the unit preserves that bar rather than substituting a 20 kg bar. Selecting an example resets the target and bar to that example and turns inventory limits and collars off.

Check sleeve capacity and secure the plates according to your equipment instructions. This tool calculates weight combinations; it does not choose a suitable lifting weight. For load estimates, see the 1RM calculator.
